HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series: This is What Made Us Champions After 2 years – Tevita Ikanivere

Fiji Rugby Sevens wins their first title after 2 years

The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team has reignited its dominance in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, clinching a historic victory at the Dubai Sevens. After a 21-tournament drought lasting over 2.5 years, Fiji showcased exceptional grit, teamwork, and strategy to defeat Spain 19-5 in the final. Tevita Ikanivere, a key player and team leader, shared the secrets behind their resurgence and championship win.

Hard Work and Preparation

Ikanivere emphasized the importance of hard work in their six-month preparation leading to the tournament. “We faced disappointment at the Olympics, but we knew that consistent effort and focus would eventually pay off,” he stated. The team focused on rigorous training sessions and mental resilience, building a cohesive unit ready to face any challenge.

Adapting to Opponents

One of the standout aspects of Fiji’s gameplay was their ability to adapt. In the final against Spain, Fiji demonstrated exceptional defensive skills and took advantage of critical moments to seize the match. Ikanivere attributed this adaptability to studying opponents’ strategies and refining their own.

Teamwork and Leadership

According to Ikanivere, teamwork was at the heart of their success. “Every player contributed, from our youngest to the most experienced,” he said. The leadership of coach Osea Kolinisau and senior players created an environment of trust and accountability. Their ability to bring out the best in each other was key to their Dubai triumph.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey back to the top was far from easy. Fiji had not won a tournament since May 2022 and struggled during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Despite setbacks, the team never lost sight of their goals. Their Dubai victory signals a renewed confidence and determination to maintain their position among rugby sevens elites.

Looking Ahead

Ikanivere stressed that this win is just the beginning. With the series continuing, the team is committed to building on this momentum. “We’ve set a standard for ourselves, and we plan to keep pushing harder,” he affirmed.

Fiji’s Dubai victory is not just a testament to their skills on the field but also to their unwavering dedication off it. As the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series progresses, the team looks forward to showcasing their trademark flair and passion for the game.
