Kevin Durant has ignited a storm of speculation with his recent comments on contract extension talks with the Phoenix Suns. The basketball superstar, known for his precision both on and off the court, addressed the media’s questions about his future with a response that has left many wondering about what’s next. Despite being eligible for a two-year, $123.8 million extension, Durant made it clear that his focus is not on contract negotiations right now.
“I’m not even thinking about it,” Durant stated during preseason practices. “I’m just going to play out my contract really, and just focus on that. Focus on the team. I haven’t even really had conversations with anybody about a contract. Trying to focus on basketball.” With his current deal running through the 2025-26 season, Durant isn’t rushing into anything. Instead, he’s zeroing in on what he’s always done best—playing at an elite level.
But it’s not just Durant who’s playing it cool. Phoenix Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein confirmed that while contract discussions are happening, the relationship between the franchise and Durant remains rock solid. “The most important thing is Kevin loves being here, and we love having Kevin here,” Bartelstein said. “We’re always having dialogue. The relationship is what matters the most.” With Durant’s agent, Rich Kleiman, also in the mix, there’s constant communication happening behind the scenes.
While Durant isn’t putting much stock in the financial side of things, the Suns are undoubtedly keen on locking him down for the long haul. After going all-in with a massive trade to acquire Durant from the Brooklyn Nets in February 2023, Phoenix is counting on him to lead the team in its quest for its first NBA Championship. However, the landscape of the NBA changes quickly, and rival teams, including the Houston Rockets, are reportedly waiting for any opportunity to lure Durant away from the desert.
Durant, who averaged an impressive 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists last season, has shown no signs of slowing down despite nearing his 37th birthday. His longevity in the league, now entering his 18th season, is setting new benchmarks for NBA stars. With new talents like Ryan Dunn, Tyus Jones, and Monte Morris joining the Suns, and fresh energy following last season’s disappointing first-round sweep against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Suns are positioned to be a major threat in the upcoming season.
As the 2024-25 NBA season kicks off, all eyes will be on Durant and the Suns. For now, Durant is taking it one game at a time, saying, “I’ve been blessed enough to be in this position for 18 years, and I’m not really focused on the money part of it. I’m just trying to keep getting better and keep growing my game and see how good I can get.”
With no immediate decisions on the table, the basketball world is left to wonder: will Durant stay with Phoenix for the long haul, or could a blockbuster move shake up the league once again? Only time will tell.
