In yet another blow to Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, the national power grid collapsed for the third time within a week, plunging parts of the country into darkness. The collapse occurred on Saturday morning around 8:16 AM, causing power generation to drop dramatically from 3,042 megawatts to a mere 47 megawatts.
Earlier in the week, the grid had tripped on Monday and again on Tuesday, just as efforts were underway to restore power. By 9 AM on Saturday, power allocation to distribution companies had fallen to zero, leaving millions without electricity.
The cause of the repeated collapses remains unclear, and officials from the Transmission Company of Nigeria were unreachable for comment at the time of this report. Experts and citizens alike are expressing growing frustration with the recurring outages, which have disrupted daily life and business activities across the country.
More details will emerge as investigations continue.
