Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has dismissed any thoughts of retirement, despite suffering multiple concussions during his five-year NFL career. In a recent interview, Tagovailoa opened up about his injuries and the ongoing challenges he faces in the league.

Dismissing Retirement Talks

Tagovailoa has experienced significant head injuries, including his most recent concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. After colliding with Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin, Tagovailoa was sidelined for five weeks. However, he made it clear that the idea of retirement never crossed his mind. “Retirement never stuck in my mind. Whether the doctors told me or not, it would have just been information for me,” he explained.

Support From Family and Dedication to the Game

Tagovailoa credited his family for supporting his decision to continue playing. He expressed his commitment to the game, saying, “With what I was doing working out week-to-week, I’m in here every day. It’s like a no-brainer, what am I working hard for then?” His family’s encouragement has played a key role in his determination to keep playing despite the risks.

Facing Difficult Decisions on the Field

Reflecting on his concussion during the Bills game, Tagovailoa admitted that the situation was challenging. He described the uncertainty he felt in deciding whether to slide or go for the first down. “Trying to do all I can to get a first down, not knowing, can I slide in this situation?” he said. These split-second decisions are a constant part of the game.

Controversial Tackle and Moving Forward

Tagovailoa also faced criticism for using his head in a tackle during a recent game against the Los Angeles Rams. While he didn’t experience any ill effects, he admitted that it was bad tackling form. “It was pretty bad tackling form though,” Tagovailoa said. He expressed his desire to improve and avoid such situations in the future.

Despite the ongoing concerns surrounding his safety, Tagovailoa remains determined to continue his career. He wants to be known for his resilience and commitment, not as “the poster boy for concussions.” His passion for the game keeps him moving forward, even as he navigates the risks of playing in the NFL.
